Benefactors of Asthma Research Receive National Jewish Health Humanitarian Award

Nancy and James Berry Hill and Marjorie and Stephen Raphael Honored at Annual Golf Tournament

On July 31, National Jewish Health held its 21st Annual Golf Tournament benefiting The Fund to Cure Asthma at Tamarack Country Club. This year’s tournament raised nearly $230,000. 
 

The Fund to Cure Asthma is aimed at raising critically important funds for basic and clinical research related to understanding, treating and eventually conquering this widespread, debilitating and often fatal disease. 

“Twenty-five million people in this country suffer from asthma and half of them do not have their disease under control. With the support of the Fund to Cure Asthma, along with the work of scientists and physicians in the Cohen Family Asthma Institute, National Jewish Health is on the way to understanding what triggers severe asthma attacks and finding ways to prevent them,” said Marc Krause, National Jewish Health associate vice president for development, eastern region.

Nancy and James Berry Hill and Marjorie and Stephen Raphael received the National Jewish Health Humanitarian Award, which is given to individuals nationwide who have made significant civic and charitable contributions to their communities and professions.

The Hills and Raphaels founded The Fund to Cure Asthma in 1994, after National Jewish Health, the leading respiratory hospital in the nation, saved the life of the Raphaels’ daughter, Jackie, and helped the Hills’ son, David, learn to manage his severe asthma.

“Twenty-three years ago, Marjorie, Steve, Nancy and Jim had the foresight to establish a fund to help the millions of children and adults worldwide suffering from asthma,” said Krause. “The efforts to establish this fund are in large part responsible for the leadership role we continue to play in the research and treatment of asthma.”

Tournament co-chairs were Robert E. Helpern, founding partner of Tannenbaum Helpern Syracuse & Hirschtritt LLP and member of the National Jewish Health Council of National Trustees, and Stephen B. Siegel, chairman of Global Brokerage at CBRE, Inc. and co-chair of the National Jewish Health Council of National Trustees. Samuel B. Lewis, of SBL Property Consultants, LLC, is chairman emeritus for the event. He, too, serves on the National Jewish Health Council of National Trustees.
