Uranium Miners and Workers Encouraged to Sign up for Free, Confidential Lung Disease Screening

Miners Clinic Brings Medical Experts from National Jewish Health to Wyoming

The National Jewish Health Miners Clinic will offer free lung health screenings to former uranium industry workers in partnership with the Wyoming MedicalCenter in Casper on July 26 and 27. Lung specialists at National Jewish Health have been caring for miners and uranium industry workers for more than 25 years.

In Wyoming, the Miners Clinic screens uranium miners, millers, and ore transporters who worked in the uranium industry before 1972.  Theseuranium industry workers are at risk for lung scarring (silicosis) and for lung cancer as a result of their work exposure. Uranium mill workers and oretransporters are also at risk for kidney cancer and chronic kidney diseases.For many of these illnesses, early diagnosis and medical care can improve quality of life and long-term survival.

This free screening program is staffed by lung specialists and certified spirometry technicians.  Miners Clinic benefits counselors will review test results to determine if patients are eligible to file for federally-funded radiation exposure benefits, and will assist eligible participants with this process.
