Former New Mexico Governor Garrey Carruthers and Molzen-Corbin CEO Del Archuleta To Be Honored

Two of New Mexico’s most distinguished philanthropists, former New Mexico Governor Garrey Carruthers and Molzen-Corbin CEO Adelmo “Del” Archuleta, will be honored at the 30^th annual New Mexico Spirit of Achievement Award dinner on Monday, April 23. The dinner at the Embassy Suites Hotel Albuquerque will benefit National Jewish Health, the nation’s #1 respiratory hospital.

The Spirit of Achievement Award is presented to individuals who have made significant civic and charitable contributions. Carruthers, who serves as the Dean of the College of Business at New Mexico State University, has dedicated his life to service and education. Archuleta, a native of New Mexico, has devoted his life to improving the lives of New Mexicans and giving back through community service.

National Jewish Health, based in Denver, has strong ties to New Mexico. Its physicians treated nearly 2,200 New Mexico residents with respiratory, cardiac, immune, and related diseases over the last three years, and thousands more in the 30 years since the Spirit of Achievement Award Dinner began. Over the last three years, National Jewish Health also provided more than $100,000 in charity care to New Mexicans. Currently 10 physicians who trained at National Jewish Health practice in New Mexico.

For 30 years, National Jewish Health has worked with dedicated community members in the Albuquerque area to raise awareness of its services available to New Mexicans. In addition to honoring philanthropic Albuquerque residents, attendees at the annual Spirit of Achievement Award dinner raise funds to support the critical research and treatment of patients with respiratory, cardiac, immune, and related diseases at National Jewish Health. Last year’s dinner raised $54,000.

Former New Mexico Governor Garrey Carruthers has dedicated his life to service and education. 

Carruthers holds Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees from New Mexico State University (NMSU) in agriculture and economics and a PhD in economics from Iowa State University.  Carruthers’ work in public service began as a White House Fellow assigned to the Secretary of Agriculture from 1974 to 1975. He was Assistant Secretary of the U.S. Department of the Interior from 1981 to 1984. He served the State of New Mexico as Governor from 1987 to 1991.

His entrepreneurial spirit led him next into healthcare, where he was a cofounder, president and CEO of Cimarron Health Plan, a homegrown managed care company, which was  sold to a national managed care corporation. After years of public service, Carruthers became the Dean of the College of Business at NMSU in 2003. Carruthers received a grant from the Daniels Foundation and serves as the principal investigator on an NMSU project promoting ethics education, with an emphasis on ethical challenges between the private and public sectors in New Mexico. He regularly presents on the subject throughout the state. Carruthers also serves as the Vice President for Economic Development and in 2009 was appointed as the first director of the Pete V. Domenici Institutes. He is active within the broader community of New Mexico as a founding member and current chairman of the board for Think New Mexico and lifetime board member of the Association of Commerce and Industry. Garrey just completed six years on the Greater Las Cruces Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors. His past service also includes bank board directorships, and leadership positions on task forces for three former New Mexico governors and many other community organizations.

Adelmo “Del” Archuleta is a native of New Mexico, and he has devoted his life to improving the lives of New Mexicans and giving back through community service.

Born in Clayton, NM, Archuleta graduated from New Mexico State University with a master’s degree in civil (environmental) engineering in 1975. Upon graduation, Archuleta joined Molzen-Corbin, a full-service consulting engineering and architecture company. Within 10 years, he became chief executive officer and majority stockholder. He has received numerous accolades throughout his career, including being named one of New Mexico’s Most Influential People by New Mexico Business Journal and one of the 100 Power Brokers by New Mexico Business Weekly Magazine numerous times. Under his management, Molzen-Corbin has been ranked as one of the 500 Largest Hispanic-Owned Companies by Hispanic Business Magazine for 19 consecutive years. Archuleta has also been recognized by his peers, receiving the National Community Service Award from the American Consulting Engineers Council and Ingeniero Veterano de Nuevo Award from the New Mexico Society of Professional Engineers. From New Mexico State University, he received the Mike Watts Civil Engineering Alumni Award and the Emeritus Faculty Distinguished Alumni Award, was inducted into the Honorary Academy of Civil, Agricultural, and Geological Engineering, and was named Distinguished Alumni for the College of Engineering. In 2010, he was also presented with an honorary doctorate from New Mexico State University.

Active in the community, Archuleta has served in leadership positions for numerous boards, including the United Way of Central New Mexico, the Greater Albuquerque Chamber of Commerce, Explora! Science Center and Children’s Museum, New Mexico State University, Presbyterian Health Services, Public Service Company of New Mexico, New Mexico Mutual and the Bank of Albuquerque. He also served as the president of the State Board of Education. Archuleta’s dedication to public service was recognized in 2003, when received the prestigious Governor’s New Mexico Distinguished Public Service Award. In 2010, he received the Distinguished Citizen Award by the Great Southwest Council of the National Eagle Scout Association.
